We
managed a 3-2 win at Selly Oak XS 'A' on 19th March which, as they are
second in the table, is a pretty good result, particularly given that Mark
lost.Dave Thomas played first
and had a host of chances - in fact it was a scrappy frame for both players,
but Dave's opponent took more of his chances and won pretty comfortably in
the end.
Paul's game was also a bit scrappy but
interspersed with some good shots too. Paul was ahead early on and then lost
the lead. It eventually came down to the last two colours. His opponent
tried a rather audacious double in the middle and can count himself unlucky
that the pink came towards the yellow pocket. Still, it was a fairly thin
cut and one where the cue ball had to be controlled. Fortunately for Paul,
he potted it and came reasonably good on the black with a quarter ball cut.
It was a bit of a stretch, but he managed to put a good stroke on it and was
delighted to see it go down to seal victory by a single point. Actually,
according to the Stirchley website, that's the first game his opponent has
lost all season, even though he has only played 9 games, he had won them
all.
Mark played Kevin Ellis who leads the
averages having won all his 15 games this season. Both players did not play
to their full potential - some decent stuff, but no-one managed a convincing
break. This one also went to the wire. Kevin had the first real chance and
wobbled the black in the green pocket. Luckily for him, the black came down
the table and finished pretty safe near the black spot. Mark tried a half
ball shot leaving the black on one side cushion and the white on the other.
He got it much too thin and left Kevin a fairly easy long pot to clinch it.
Amazingly, another frame won by a single point!
It was a shame for Stuart who is just
behind Kevin in the averages and really needed Mark to win which would have
done him a favour. Still, that's the way it goes sometimes.
The star of the night was Alan. He had
no practice before the match, but played some great stuff. He had a 37 break
and dominated from start to finish, beating a pretty useful opponent in the
process.
Stuart's game was close most of the
way, but when he got his chance on the last couple of reds, he put together
a nice clearance to win by a distance.
Last match of the 2007/08 season next
week at Windermere.
