MATCH REPORT -  BVSC v KINGS NORTON XS 'B'

I'm pleased to report we did it...yes, we beat Rubery in the 2007 League Cup final (hence the new banner above!)

Truth is that our victory was down to one man, Luke. He was our man with a stunning performance.

He played first and OK, he played their weakest player, but boy did he take advantage. He won by the massive margin of 116 points. In fact the scoreboard was just not big enough as it only went up to 119 and Luke amassed 123 points!! He did it with two significant breaks of 48 and 55, so what a start that was!!

Alan was next up against their captain, Carl Rose and Paul the captain was almost as pleased with Alan's efforts. Carl is a very decent player and we really expected Alan to lose. Well, he managed to win, only by 7, but that was a great effort where he took advantage of his chances.

Mark was next against Chris Scanlon, who plays a really attacking game, so can be very dangerous when he gets going. The match was heading Mark's way when he was on a break of 36. Unfortunately, he lost the cue ball in potting the penultimate red and went in off. The remaining balls were then positioned as follows: the pink was basically on its spot, the last red was immediately behind that and the black ball immediately behind that. Chris had a free ball of course. He took it, but got no sort of position on a colour, so left the cue ball around by the brown spot. I was beginning to feel sorry for Ian, the referee as you could envisage a number of potential misses being called. It's the hardest escape from a snooker ever seen, but incredibly Mark found an angle, first time to find the gap between pink and black. That's got to be the shot of the season. However, unfortunately Mark's luck did not hold as he managed to push the red over a pocket and Chris cleared the table to win by 28 points.

Then it was Paul's turn against Dave Kesterton who beat him earlier in the season. Paul missed a good chance early on and it knocked his confidence a bit. It was just one of those games where he just could not find any fluency and he was beginning to worry about the 95 point lead we had, being eradicated. Fortunately, Dave was not at his best and he did not really punish Paul for his mistakes. In these cup matches, the colours are so important and Paul managed to knock in the last 3 to keep his defeat down to a respectable 10 points.

That left Ian Rawlings to protect a lead of 85 against Jock Irvine. Jock is a very good player and quite capable of over-turning the deficit. However, Ian managed to take his first chance and although he only managed some low value colours, the crucial thing was just to take reds off the table. Jock came back into it, but he needed high value colours and pink and black were not best placed. Ian just kept plugging away and eventually, with 3 reds still left, Jock conceded.

It's fantastic that we've won another trophy and it has been agreed that Luke has to be the one to collect the trophy when it comes to the Presentation Night. Luke was also the man to get us into the final with that dramatic re-spotted black in the semis, and he definitely would get the 'man of the tournament award'...if there was one of course!

So the BVSC A team go marching on. Yet another trophy for the cabinet. Amazing that although we deserved to, over the years, we hardly won anything and then all of a sudden, the floodgates have opened and they're coming thick and fast now. Long may it continue.

Well done to all the players, Paul Haywood (capt), Ian Rawlings, Dave Thomas, Alan Carter and Luke Ellis. Plus of course, Graham Garner although he hasn't been able to play all season.
