I have to report a disappointing 3-2
defeat last night against Kings Norton XS 'B' who are actually bottom of the
league. Although Luke Ellis was back, unfortunately Mark Sutton couldn't
play so we weren't at full strength.
Luke was first off and he is not playing
anywhere near his usual standard, probably as he's not getting in as much
practice as he was due to work commitments. It was a bit of a low scoring
game, but Luke was looking good, but then his opponent looked favourite when
potting the first 3 colours and with the other 3 on their spots. He managed
the blue too, but had to go in and out of baulk and just came too far on the
pink. It was still on into the corner, but he had to send the cue ball round
the table to get back for the black. He missed the pink and after a bit of
safety play, Luke knocked in a long straight pink to seal victory.
On the other table, Dave Thomas was
playing their best player, Darren. Dave had a couple of chances, but did not
take advantage, whereas with the chances he had, Darren did put some points
together.
Paul Haywood had one of his better
games for the season. He got a couple of 20+ contributions and played a few
decent safety shots too. In all honesty, Paul never gave his opponent much
to go at at all and he needed snookers with 3 reds remaining.
Alan's match, was pretty close but for
a 25 break from his opponent which enabled his opponent to get over the
winning line..
So, it was 2-2 with Stuart on last and
he was not missing much in practice, so the captain was pretty confident of
a victory. Particularly as the guy he was playing was a guy who was not
familiar to us and was looking pretty nervous early on. Stuart just failed
to take real advantage of a couple of decent chances. The crucial point came
when he ran out of position and went for a difficult red that was certainly
a ball he would pot 6 times out of 10, but he failed and left the balls wide
open. His opponent then got into his stride. He amassed 30 points and then
fluked a pink which if he'd missed would have given Stuart every chance to
get back into it. However, he then proceeded to pot some lovely balls
including a superb green which enabled him to nudge the yellow away from the
brown and after that it was all academic.
